CEFI has been coordinated as part of the EU InterReg project, ECCO, and is led by the Irish partners, South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) and Munster Technological University (MTU). The Federation has been in development over the last number of months, with the official release anticipated in February 2022.

CEFI aims to:

  • Provide a strong united voice as an NGO to represent the views of the Renewable Energy Communities in Ireland that will advocate on behalf of the sector at a local, national and EU level, working in conjunction with existing organisations, to enable the sector to develop to its full potential.
  • Provide a networking opportunity for energy communities to support each other in their development.
  • Be to the fore in highlighting and developing innovative opportunities to support the development and expansion of the Renewable Energy Community Sector in Ireland.
  • Provide education, training and information to its members as appropriate to equip them to fully contribute to the development of the sector.
  • Contribute to the development of a suite of support structures including technical, legal and financial structures to encourage the development of Renewable Energy Community generation projects.

CEFI objectives:

The Federation has outlined the following objectives to maximise the participation of Renewable Energy Communities in the renewable energy market.

  1. Advocate for fair energy market policies that facilities full participation of Renewable Energy Communities
  2. Ensure the benefits of community energy projects remain within those Renewable Energy Communities
  3. Advocate for equal opportunities for all Renewable Energy Communities to participate in the sector as they see fit
  4. Ensure a support platform is in place for Renewable Energy Communities to build their capacity
  5. Ensure Renewable Energy Communities play their role in helping to reduce carbon emissions through participation in sustainable energy initiatives
  6. Ensure the sustainable development of the Renewable Energy Communities involved based on policies developed by members
